The postdoctoral fellow will work in the Prosody Lab and the Centre for Comparative Psycholinguistics with Drs. Anja Arnhold and Juhani Järvikivi on projects relating to the prosodic marking of focus in Canadian English and the role of prosody in referential processing. Primary duties include active engagement in research and the research community, conceptualizing, designing, and conducting research projects, preparing findings for publication, and working with graduate and undergraduate students in the two labs. Candidates need not be Canadian Citizens to apply. The salary for the position will be $40,000 CAD a year, $3000 a year for research related costs, and supplemental health benefits, in keeping with university postdoctoral fellowship guidelines. The desired start date is April 1, 2020, at the latest. The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The Prosody Lab is a recently-established and fully-equipped space for conducting experimental studies on the production and perception of spoken language. The lab houses a large sound-attenuated booth that contains a station for classical one-participant set-ups, as well allowing to record conversations of several speakers seated comfortably around a table. Lab members also have access to research facilities of other labs at the department or the Faculty of Arts, including further recording booths and classroom-sized computer labs for perception studies. The Centre for Comparative Psycholinguistics is a major venue of experimental research in language processing in North America and a lively research environment that attracts undergraduate and graduate students and senior staff across faculties and disciplines. The CCP research facilities include a line of SR Research Eyelink eye trackers (including 2 brand new Portable Duo trackers), mobile eye tracking glasses, and a Biosemi EEG. In addition to the local facilities and contacts, the Postdoctoral fellow will benefit from and participate in the Annual Spring Training in Experimental Psycholinguistics (http://ccp.artsrn.ualberta.ca/portfolio/step/) as well as training and training events organized within the SSHRC Partnered Training Initiative Words in the World (http://wordsintheworld.ca/). Qualifications: - Completed PhD (within past 5 years and before the start date) in Linguistics, Cognitive Science, or a related field. - Demonstrated experience in prosody research within the autosegmental-metrical framework, experimental design, and relevant statistical methods. - Experience and skills with ToBI-annotation, R statistical language, and advanced statistics (e.g., LMMs, GAMMs, other regression techniques) are desirable. - Experience with any of the following: annotation of information structure, eye-tracking, EEG/ERPs, language processing, and/or individual differences would be a plus.
