Description:

The University of Cologne is seeking to hire 2 postgraduate research
assistants on a part-time basis (65%) for a research project funded by the
German Academic Research Foundation (DFG) for a time period of 3 years. The
position will give you the opportunity to pursue a project-related PhD. The
project is lead and supervised by Prof. Dr. Beatrix Busse, Vice-Rector for
Student Affairs and Teaching at the University of Cologne.

The project called "HeidelGram – Corpus and Network Analysis of the Discourses
of English Grammars from 1550 to 1900" has the aim of building a systematic
and representative XML-annotated 10-million-word corpus of English grammars
dating from 1550 to 1900. The project innovatively combines corpus-linguistic
and network-analytic methods for examining, assessing and visualizing the
evaluative discursive practices in historical English grammars. The corpus
will thus enable the investigation of research questions beyond the purely
grammatical, including pragmatic and sociolinguistic practices, the
development of thought-styles as well as grammar authors’ discursively
construed metalinguistic attitudes to the relationship between linguistic
norming and language usage.

We are seeking 2 postgraduate researchers with prior knowledge in corpus or
computational linguistics and English historical linguistics who are
interested in doing a project-related PhD. Being one of the largest and most
research-intensive universities in Germany, the University of Cologne offers
