Although the conference overall has a special interest in how issues of language and language education play out in Central Asia, papers do not need to be related to Central Asia, and researchers do not need to be based in the region. Plenary Speakers: Umberto Ansaldo, University of Sydney Lisa Lim, University of Sydney Mukul Saxena, Nazarbayev University Call for Papers: Abstract submissions are invited to the inaugural Central Asia Language and Education Conference (CALE) to take place at KIMEP University in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on May 14-15, 2020. Individual paper presentations should report on original research by one or more authors. Individual papers will be allocated 20 minutes for presentation plus 5 minutes for discussion. First authors, presenters, and other attending participants must register for the conference. Each participant may submit only one abstract as the first or sole author, but can be a second, or subsequent, co-author of another paper or papers. The working languages of the conference will be English, Kazakh, and Russian. Plenary talks will be held in English, but abstracts may be submitted in any of the three working languages. The conference fee will be approximately 100 USD for international participants and 10,000 KZT for participants based in Central Asian countries (to be confirmed). This fee will include admission to all sessions; tea and coffee on both days; conference program; conference goods; and the certificate of attendance. Papers presented at the conference will be eligible for publication in the journal Language, Culture, Environment (https://www.kimep.kz/lcej/). Submission: Abstracts should be a maximum of 250 words (including any references) and submitted in .pdf, .doc, or .docx format to [email protected] by 23:59 on February 1, 2020, East Kazakhstan Time (GMT +6). Abstracts should address the theoretical basis, methodology, data, and significance of the research.
