Meeting Description:

The ISB 13 Organizing Committee and the ISB Steering Committee are pleased to
announce the 13th International Symposium on Bilingualism. The Symposium will
take place on 10-14 July 2021 at the University of Warsaw (Poland).

Theme:

The conference theme, “Bilingualism in Flux”, presents bilingualism as a
dynamic and multifaceted phenomenon existing on a continuum. The in flux part
of the theme is a twofold concept. First, it is understood as relating to
non-linguistic circumstances that foster not only diverse, but also transient
bilingual communities throughout the world. Nowadays, new waves of migration
influence the linguistic status quo and enrich existing environments. Second,
it pertains to the very processes taking place in language, a dynamic entity
prone to changes. The fluctuating circumstances entail linguistic consequences
reflected in the development of the second and further languages,
cross-linguistic influence, language attrition, incomplete acquisition, and
maintenance of heritage languages. Finally, the conference leitmotif
highlights not only the local changes presently taking place in Poland, but
also the country’s linguistic heritage.

Proposals that fit within that theme are particularly eagerly solicited.
However, ISB 13 invites submissions in all areas of research in bilingualism
and multilingualism (whether linked to the conference theme or not), including
but not limited to: linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics,
neurolinguistics, applied linguistics, neuropsychology, first and second/
third language acquisition, clinical linguistics, language and education, and
multilingual societies.


Call for Papers:

The ISB 13 Organizing Committee has adopted a modified procedure for
submitting proposals for this Biannual Meeting.

The Academic Program will be organized in the format of thematic sections,
with each section organizing a variety of presentations in a given field. The
program will be very broad, with many thematic sections covering all the main
areas of research on bilingualism and multilingualism. There will also be an
open section, consisting of stand-alone papers and posters which do not
necessarily fit within any of the accepted thematic sections.

Abstracts are solicited for three categories of proposals: thematic sections,
individual papers, and posters.

There is a two-stage selection process for submitting proposals to the
academic program:

Stage 1: Call for Thematic Section Proposals: 15 November 2019 – 15 April 2020

Thematic sections allow for extended, interactive discussion on a specific
topic, focusing on a cluster of related papers. Each submission should include
at least three presentations (papers,  thematic sessions, panels, round
tables, workshops, etc.). Submissions must include an abstract for the panel
(of a maximum of 500 words in length), as well as for each of the constituent
presentation (of a maximum of 300 words in length). For details see:

Besides presentations indicated in their original thematic section proposal,
Thematic Section Leaders may be asked to accept additional individual papers
and posters proposed to their section (see Stage 2, below). The decision
whether or not to accept a proposal in a thematic section rests with each
thematic section as represented by that entity’s program Leaders.

Stage 2: Call for individual Papers and Posters:  15 June 2020 – 31 October
2020

The second stage of the process is open to anyone wishing to propose
individual papers or posters. 
Individual papers: Papers are formal presentations on original research or
original pedagogy-focused topics by one or more authors, lasting a total of 20
minutes with 5 additional minutes for discussion. Abstracts should be a
maximum of 300 words in length.
Posters: Poster sessions are for displaying original research or pedagogy that
offers the opportunity for individualized, informal discussion with others in
the field. Posters are especially effective for presenting work-in-progress,
fieldwork, and results of empirical research for which data can be presented
visually. Posters will be available throughout an entire day of the conference
with presenters in attendance for a 90-minute poster session. Abstracts should
be a maximum of 300 words in length. 

Paper and Poster Proposers will have to complete the proposal process online
using the application form on the ISB 13 website (http://isb13.wls.uw.edu.pl/,
available from 15 June 2020). Once logged in, they will be asked to select
which thematic section their poster or paper should be considered for. There
is also an open section welcoming individual paper and poster proposals that
do not fit into any of the listed thematic sections.
