Meeting Description:

The workshop is part of the 9th International Contrastive Linguistics
Conference (ICLC9).

The label 'West Iberian languages' is here employed to refer to the
regional/minority languages today spoken in the area loosely corresponding to
the Roman province of Gallaecia in the 3rd Century (e.g., López Carreira
2016): present-day Galicia, Asturias, the north of Portugal, and the provinces
of León and Zamora in Castile and León. Along with Spanish and Portuguese,
several minority languages are spoken in the area, which belong to two
distinct linguistic groups (e.g., Merlan 2007): Galician-Portuguese (Galician)
and Asturian-Leonese (Asturian, Leonese, Mirandese).


Call for Papers: 

Authors are invited to submit philological or sociolinguistic contributions to
the study of any aspect of the syntax of these languages, as long as a
comparison between two or more languages or language varieties is involved
(while one of these languages must belong to the West Iberian group, the
other[s] may or may not). Synchronic as well as diachronic papers are welcome.

Questions to be addressed may include (but are not limited to):

- How and to what extent does contact with Spanish and/or Portuguese impact
the syntax of these language(s)? Do synchronic or diachronic varieties of
these languages show significant variation in terms of syntax?)?

- Does  a contrastive study of the syntactic structure of these languages
point to the existence of a Galician-Asturian-Leonese linguistic continuum in
the West Iberian space?

- What can syntactic analysis tell us about the status of language varieties
currently disputed between two languages or linguistic groups?
 
- Do syntactic studies provide support for the inclusion of Galician in
Lusophony?
 
- How and to what extent can syntactic analysis help us draw a more precise
sociolinguistic map of the West Iberian space?
 
- How can syntactic studies contribute to the identification of the best
measures to preserve these languages and the culture each one of them conveys?
 
- What new insights can the syntactic analysis of West Iberian languages
contribute to the field of theoretical and applied linguistics?
 
Papers will last 20 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for discussion. All
submissions will be evaluated anonymously by the members of the ICLC9
scientific committee. 

Submissions must be made through the EasyChair system, which may be accessed
at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=iclc9 specifying that the abstract
should be considered for presentation at the workshop on ‘The syntax of West
Iberian languages,’ no later than February 15, 2020, 

Abstracts must be anonymous and should not exceed 500 words, excluding
references.

To facilitate attendance to all fellow conference participants, papers should
be presented in either English or Spanish.

The notification of acceptance will be sent out by February 29, 2020.

A volume collecting all the contributions to the workshop is planned, possibly
as a special issue of a linguistic journal.
