I don't agree. Paulie the canary cannot be an avatar of Mr Carnivore.
Mr Carnivore and Mr Bird are not the same Individual.

Right. I would reserve the word avatar for the conventional individuals.
Mr Bird is not an avatar of Mr Carnivore, nor an avatar of Mr Blue. 
Mr Bird sometimes is a carnivore, and sometimes is blue, that's all.

Why would seeing Paulie count as seeing Mr C? Mr C and Mr Bird have
avatars in common, but Paulie is not one of them.

Clearly it doesn't, but it can't count as seeing a carnivore either.
It can only count as seeing something that sometimes (but not that time) 
is a carnivore. That time Mr Carnivore is not present.
