300,000 has arrived - but don't get to excited yet...

That's right - we now have over 300,000 articles in our MediaWiki Wikipedia 
versions (over 320,000 counting the UseMod Wikipedias). This is a truely 
remarkable milestone given where most of the growth has occurred - outside of 
the English version. In fact, counting the UseMod wikis, there are now as 
many articles in all other languages combined as there are in English! Soon 
Wikipedia will not have any one language with a majority of the articles. 

However, we are just too darn popular already and our poor server is just too 
overworked for us to make an official announcement of this fact to the world 
yet. Therefore I suggest that everyone wait until two days after our servers 
are upgraded before distributing any press releases (en.wikipedia's version 
will still be distributed one week after non-English distribution to even out 
server load). 

We want to show people how neat Wikipedia is without having them get bored and 
frustrated with waiting for pages to be displayed and for their edits to be 
saved. We also don't want to be down for any time at all for server upgrades 
at the same time as a major news outlet has a story about us on their front 
page. 

I've already asked Wikitech-l for an update on when the server upgrades are 
going to be installed but I have not received an answer yet (it was supposed 
to be last week but the parts were still in the mail, then it was supposed to 
be this week but I haven't heard any specifics yet).
