Comedy of New Age manners and mores is set among the "worried creat=
ives" of post-9/11 New York. It's Lower Manhattan in 2005 and a new pa=
inter and 9/11 survivor faces an artistic dilemma -- should he cave to sh=
ifting cultural mores or stand his sacred ground over a commission?=C2=A0=
Since classical times, artists have had to reconcile the demands of th=
eir patrons with their own artistic integrity. "Zen A.M." is meant to ill=
ustrate the artist's conundrum, nesting it in present-day issues of class=
identification, compassion, cultural identity and creative resistance. T=
he play offers us laughable characters who are straining to act rationall=
y when faced with difficult decisions of this sort.=C2=A0 Bruno, a 9/11=
survivor, has abandoned his lucrative Wall Street career to pursue his l=
ifelong dream of becoming a painter.=C2=A0He has been commissioned to pro=
vide a painting for a museum being planned for the 9/11 site, but feels p=
olitically conflicted about it. As Bruno's vacillations increase, hysteri=
a and hilarity ensue.=C2=A0=C2=A0Can financial folly, a marriage-minded c=
onservative girlfriend, a greedy guru, and a crusading fashionista change=
his mind? The play is light farce with the theme that Americans will n=
ever agree about anything again because we are so divided, but its deeper=
theme is the price of artistic integrity. WITH Alexandra Bonesho*=
