The Department of Mathematics at the University of Primorska has two open PhD positions in Mathematics. The PhD positions are fully funded for four years. The Starting date is October 1st, 2026. The Deadline for the applications is June 16th, 2026. The candidates for PhD positions should have a Master’s degree in Mathematics (obtained in the last 4 years or by September 24th 2026 at the latest) and a very good knowledge of the English language. PhD Position in Graph Theory: Supervisor: Dr. Slobodan Filipovski The young researcher will join the research program P1-0285: Algebra, discrete mathematics, probability and game theory. The young researcher will work in the field of graph theory, with particular emphasis on algebraic, structural, and chemical graph theory. The proposed research may address topics such as extremal problems in graph theory, properties of graphs with prescribed symmetry or regularity, graph invariants, spectral parameters, chemical graph invariants and descriptors, as well as selected questions concerning special classes of graphs and their combinatorial structure. The project is intended to provide advanced training in contemporary discrete mathematics through rigorous theoretical work, the development of original methods, and, where appropriate, the use of computational techniques in support of mathematical investigation. Questions related to this PhD position should be sent to [email protected] PhD position in Number Theory Supervisor: Dr. Aleksander Simonič Description: The young researcher will join the research program P1-0404: Mathematical modelling and encryption: from theoretical concepts to real-life applications. The young researcher will work in analytic number theory, with a focus on the Riemann zeta-function and related Dirichlet L-functions, especially on questions concerning their values, logarithmic derivatives, zeros in and near the critical strip, and the implications of these phenomena for the distribution of prime numbers. The project can combine classical methods from complex analysis with explicit and effective techniques, aiming not only for theoretical results but also for concrete numerical bounds and formulas. This research area offers a strong entry point into modern number theory.
