MATS is a fully funded, 12-week program for aspiring and established
researchers and field-builders working on AI alignment, interpretability,
security, and governance.

Fellows work closely with mentors from organizations including Anthropic,
Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Redwood Research, and AI Futures Project. The
Winter 2027 cohort runs January 19 - April 10, 2027, primarily in Berkeley
and London, with a $6,400/month stipend, up to $8,000/month
compute/research budget for non-technical participants or $16,000/month for
technical participants, and housing, meals, and travel covered.

MATS fellows work across research streams in seven tracks
<https://www.matsprogram.org/tracks?utm_source=dmanet&utm_medium=mailing-list&utm_campaign=w27>:
Empirical

alongside our recently introduced Biosecurity
<https://www.matsprogram.org/tracks/biosecurity?utm_source=dmanet&utm_medium=mailing-list&utm_campaign=w27>
track, focused on catastrophic biological risk in a world reshaped by
advanced AI, and Founding & Field-Building
<https://www.matsprogram.org/tracks/founding-and-field-building?utm_source=dmanet&utm_medium=mailing-list&utm_campaign=w27>,
for founders, field-builders, and high-agency generalists looking to build,
scale, and strengthen AI safety organizations and the broader field.

Most fellows continue past the initial 12 weeks: over 80% of fellows who
apply for a funded 6-12 month extension secure one, with ongoing
mentorship, support and compute.

MATS has supported 600+ researchers so far. Among pre-2026 alumni, 75% now
work directly in AI safety/security, and fellows have co-authored 215+
papers with over 17,000 citations.
