Silicon-based speaker set to make some noise in future earphones
A company spun off from the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems is looking commercialize a micro loudspeaker made from 100 percent silicon. After successful seed funding, Arioso Systems GmbH is now ready to take the technology to market. The MEMS (micro-electromechanical system)-based micro speaker technology has been in development ...New Atlas: 2020-04-02

As electronics shrink to nanoscale, will they still be good as gold?
Deep inside computer chips, tiny wires made of gold and other conductive metals carry the electricity used to process data. But as these interconnected circuits shrink to nanoscale, engineers worry that pressure, such as that caused by thermal expansion when current flows through these wires, might cause gold to behave more like a liquid than a ...Phys.org: 2020-03-26

Nanoscale structures give some butterflies ‘ultra-black’ wings
Now researchers in the US found that the wings of at least ten species have nanoscale structures that increase light absorption and scattering that create the “ultra-black” appearance. These structures may have evolved to enhance the contrast of colour patches used in courtship displays, according to the researchers. Understanding why the ...Physics World: 2020-04-01

Enhanced optical efficiency and color purity for organic light-emitting diodes by finely optimizing parameters of nanoscale low-refractive index grid
To extract the confined waveguided light in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), inserting a low refractive index (RI) periodic structure between the anode and organic layer has been widely investigated as a promising technology.Nature: 2020-03-27
