From my colleagues, Kevin Crowston and Hala Annabi: Hawai'i in middle of winter ;) --J CALL FOR PAPERS: Empirical Studies of Open Source Software Development (http://floss.syr.edu/HICSS2006Call) Part of the Internet and Digital Economy Track, Thirty-nineth Annual Hawai'i International Conference On System Sciences January 4-7, 2006, Hyatt Regency, Kauai, Hawaii We invite papers for a Minitrack on Studies of Open Source Software (OSS) Development. OSS is a broad term used to embrace software that is developed and released under some sort of "open source" license. OSS development creates new challenges to software development, as team members work in a distributed environment and often as volunteers rather than employees. The empirical literature on software engineering, programmers and the social and technical aspects of software development suggests that such teams would face insurmountable difficulties in developing code, yet in fact some of these teams have been remarkably successful. Understanding how these teams work is important because a digital society entails an increased use of Internet-supported distributed teams for a wide range of knowledge work. As well, OSS is an important phenomena deserving of study in its own right. Millions of users depend on systems such as Linux and the Internet relies extensively on OSS tools. In recent workshops addressing the OSS phenomenon, scholars and practitioners have identified the need for further research on the process of software engineering in OSS and the need to compare OSS to other software engineering paradigms and models. This need extends to studies of the deployment of OSS. Other commentators have suggested the need to study the work practices and social and organizational elements of OSS projects as a model for distributed work. Suggested topics for the Minitrack include: o Issues in distributed software development for OSS o Distributed collaboration in and coordination of OSS development teams o Distributed group development for OSS o OSS teams as communities of practice o Leadership in OSS groups o Governance in OSS groups o Distributed project management and distributed team management o Knowledge Management and Learning in OSS development o Group satisfaction and effectiveness in OSS development o Software development processes for OSS o Standards and OSS development (for a joint session with the Minitrack on Interorganizational and Intraorganizational Standards) MINITRACK CHAIRS Kevin Crowston Syracuse University School of Information Studies 4-206 Centre for Science and Technology Syracuse, NY 13244-4100 Email: [email protected] Hala Annabi The Information School University of Washington Box 352840, Suite 370 Mary Gates Hall Seattle, WA 98195-2840 Email: [email protected] IMPORTANT DEADLINES Abstracts Authors may contact Minitrack Chairs for guidance and indication of appropriate content at anytime.
