We are looking for Two PhD researchers willing to investigate open source=
 and common knowledge approaches in plant breeding research.
As a PhD researcher you are expected:=20
=E2=80=A2 To identify and =E2=80=9Cfollow=E2=80=9D the use of open source=
 tools (markers) and genes in different institutional settings in India a=
nd the Netherlands;=20
=E2=80=A2 To study whether and how these open source and common approache=
s change and/or reduce the dichotomies between technology-designers and t=
echnology-users and between private/public and common knowledge productio=
n systems; and=20
=E2=80=A2 To indicate how open source and common approaches create new op=
portunities for tailoring biotechnologies to location-specific needs of d=
evelopment.

The objective of the research program - =E2=80=9COpen source and commons =
in India and the Netherlands: New perspectives for development?=E2=80=9D =
- is to develop insights in the (im)possibilities for an open source know=
ledge approach in plant biotechnology development and for developing crop=
 varieties as commons; varieties possessed and developed in common.
The research will be focused on participatory plant breeding research act=
ivities linked to the development of new plant varieties for low-income f=
armers in dry-land areas of Andhra Pradesh, India.
As PhD researchers it is expected that you develop and apply a critically=
-based, technographic research methodology-technographic in the sense tha=
t it aims to map, analyze and deconstruct open source and commons plant b=
reeding research activities; critical in the sense that it considers rela=
tions of power in plant breeding technologies and indicates opportunities=
 for institutional rearrangements to strengthen the negotiating power pos=
ition of stakeholders and resource-poor client groups.
We ask
=E2=80=A2 MSc in social sciences or MSc in plant sciences in combination =
with a minor in social sciences.=20
=E2=80=A2 Knowledge of science and technology studies and/or in critical =
social theory;
=E2=80=A2 Proved interest in science and technology studies, preferably i=
n the field of plant sciences.=20
=E2=80=A2 Fluent in English.
=E2=80=A2 Capable to work in a team, composed of 4 PhD researchers, one p=
ost-doc researcher and two senior researchers focusing on analyzing on op=
en source and commons knowledge approaches.=20
We offer
We offer you a fulltime (38 hours) employment for 18 months with a possib=
le extension of 30 months after a positive evaluation.

The Department
The research group Critical Technology Construction (CTC) is part of the =
Social Sciences Department of Wageningen university. CTC focuses its rese=
arch on the social and political dimensions in technology developments, a=
cknowledging that technology is not only about material processes, but al=
so about social processes. CTC holds to an approach called =E2=80=9Ccriti=
cal constructivism=E2=80=9D. In this context constructivism refers to an =
idea that technologies are socially constructed, while critical, derived =
from critical theory, refers to a consideration of social forces and powe=
r relations in technology development.=20
Primary research interests of the group are in:
=E2=80=A2 Modern biotechnology and genomics and the role they play in int=
ernational agricultural development and food production;=20
=E2=80=A2 Possibilities for reconstructing biotechnological products and =
processes to endogenous developments,=20
=E2=80=A2 Open source and commons approaches in knowledge production.=20
Other areas of interests are the converging of nano-, bio-, informatic, a=
nd cognito-technologies, changes in intellectual property regimes (from p=
atenting to sharing) and role of geographic information systems in land-u=
se planning.
As a social sciences research unit we are participating in various interd=
isciplinary research projects aiming to reconstruct the social dimensions=
 in biotechnological and genomics developments (see www.ctc.wur.nl).
