I've made a document about the software mechanisms behind events and
state machines, with the ambition of describing the _minimum_ set of
mechanism that _all_ Orocos components would ever need.
(Communication, execution engine, task specification, ...). The draft
is on the webpage, at
 <http://www.orocos.org/documents/ipc.pdf>.

Comments are very welcome! Because:
  (i) the thing is certainly not the last word on the matter,
and
 (ii) I am eager to defend the draft against anybody that says it
      isn't the last word on the matter :-)

So, I repeat the goal of the document: describe the _minimum_ of
mechanisms that we need for synchronization in Orocos...
