First, let me thank the organizer of this wonderful prediction championship
! For so many years, he has taken the trouble to invite us, to calculate
the standings, to make the result an exciting daylong-taking experience and
to give prizes. Thanks Lars.
Well, was this a remarkable championship? Oh yes, we have seen very good
times from Wüst and Sablikova. They were never faster on lowland ice tracks.
But will we remember this championship when we are old ? I fear not. It is
one of these many championships of the past years, where Kramer's opponents
strike the flag far before the 10,000m starts. And where Wüst and Sablikova
battle for gold. In one of these halls, that all look the same.
But still, allround is far more appealing than single distances. In each
pair, something is at stake. Will Beckert lose so much, that he won't make
top-16 after 3 distances? Will Zlotkowska secure a spot for Poland next
year? That is what speed skating makes so attractive. That is why we can
endure a 10km. Because there is more at stake than this single distance. It
was nice to see that the Netherlands-Norway domination of the '60s and '70s
was restored in this championship.
Or was this the last championship before a new era is introduced? In a few
weeks, we will know what the proposals for the coming ISU Congress will be.
Will it be the definitive end of the ECh allround-old-style, as the current
rules already say? Will it be the reduction of the allround World
Championships to only once in 2 years, as has been rumoured?
I hope the changes will make speed skating more popular, but I have my
doubts. I do not believe that fewer matches will make skating more popular.
The risk is there that it will only marginalize skating further. We will
have allround championships in the coming 2 years. Next year in Hamar, if I
am right, and in 2018 probably at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam, a mile
away from where it all started, 125 years earlier. Let's cherish those!
Marcel
