Ford Unveils First FCV of Upcoming Fleet.

Ford Motor Company celebrated the production of a new Focus Fuel Cell Vehic=
le (FCV), the first in a fleet of high-tech Focus FCVs that will be deploye=
d in Michigan, California, and Florida in response to the U.S. Department o=
f Energy's solicitation, "Controlled Hydrogen Fleet and Infrastructure Demo=
nstration and Validation Project."  Additional vehicles will be placed in V=
ancouver, British Columbia and Berlin, Germany, under programs sponsored by=

Kia Showcases New Fuel Cell Sportage SUV.

Kia, a subsidiary of Hyundai, introduced a fuel cell prototype of its new S=
portage SUV at the Paris Motor Show last week.  The Sportage FCEV uses an 8=
0-kW fuel cell from UTC Fuel Cells and a drive train unit from Enova System=
s. The vehicle has a top speed of 150 km/h (93.2 mph) and the 152-liter hyd=
rogen storage tank (350 bar/5,000 psi) supports a driving range of 300 kilo=

Maryland to Lease GM Fuel Cell Vehicle.

Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., announced plans to lease Maryland's first =
fuel cell vehicle, a minivan from General Motors Corp.  The state would als=
o pursue securing a hydrogen refueling station and will approach Maryland b=
usinesses and universities about building an industrial park in which all t=

Fuel Cell Submarine "U 33" Launched, HDW Receives Orders for More.

Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG (HDW) christened the "U 33", a Class 212 A =
submarine intended for service in the German Navy.  After an extensive peri=
od of sea trials, it is expected that U 33 will enter service in January 20=
06.  The development of the fuel cell propulsion system has produced a seri=
es of subsequent orders for HDW from the Navies of Greece, Italy and Portug=

Ballard Unveils Fuel Cell Buses Down Under.

Three Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses, powered with Ballard=AE heavy-duty fuel c=
ell engines, were unveiled in Perth, Western Australia, for the start of a =
two-year demonstration.  The three buses will be driven on various Perth Ci=
ty routes.

Palcan to Supply Scooters to University of Victoria.

Palcan Power Systems Inc. has been commissioned by British Columbia's Unive=
rsity of Victoria, Institute for Integrated Energy Systems (IESVic), to pre=
pare and supply two scooters for comparative research purposes. One scooter=
 will be a commercially available battery electric scooter and the second i=
s a similar scooter converted to fuel cell power by Palcan.  The two scoote=
rs will be tested using the same driving cycles on specialized IESVic test =
equipment utilizing mathematical models and research software.  The Institu=
te's research, funded by the Western Diversification Fund and other researc=
h grants, is expected to provide substantial operational and design data to=
 Palcan.  The testing will result in improved system design models to be de=
veloped enabling fuel cell vehicle designers to optimize fuel cell stack, f=
uel cell control systems, power balancing, and electric drive system design.

Hydrogenics Scores Three Contracts to Provide Fuel Cell Modules.

Hydrogenics Corporation has won a contract to supply a 65-kW hydrogen fuel =
cell power module to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Fuel Cell Test an=
d Evaluation Center (FCTec) operated by Concurrent Technologies Corporation=
 (CTC). The power module will be integrated into an Aircraft Tow Tractor by=
 CTC and will be used in fuel cell demonstrations at select Air Force Bases=
 and civil airports in the United States, in conjunction with the United St=
ates Air Force Advanced Alternate Power Technology Transformation Office, W=
arner-Robins AFB, Georgia.  The fuel cell system will be delivered in Decem=
ber 2004.  Hydrogenics has also been awarded a contract by the Toro Company=
 to supply a HyPM fuel cell power module for integration into the company's=
 development work in grounds maintenance equipment. This contract is part o=
f Toro's ongoing strategic alternative energy research and development init=
iative for turf care equipment.  The High Technology Development Corporatio=
n (HTDC) in Hawaii has also contracted Hydrogenics to supply a HyPM 65-kW F=
uel Cell Power Module to power a 'step van'. The unit will be shipped by th=
e end of the year.

Yamaha Road-Testing Fuel Cell Motorcycle.

Yamaha Motor Co. has started road tests on a motorcycle powered by a methan=
ol fuel cell, currently collecting data on the environmental impact of the =
fuel technology.  The tests are being conducted on the FC06 model, based on=
 Yamaha's Passol electric scooter, which has a 4-liter fuel tank, enabling =
it to travel more than 100 kilometers.  Yamaha aims to market the vehicle i=
n 2005.

BOC and Cellex to Develop Fuel Cell Forklifts.

BOC and Cellex Power Products Inc. are working together to develop hydrogen=
 supply solutions and fuel cells to power forklift trucks used in large dis=
tribution warehouses in North America.  Cellex will supply the hydrogen fue=
l cell power units that go into the trucks; BOC will provide the indoor hyd=
rogen refueling facilities.  The next round of customer trials of the hydro=
gen powered forklift trucks is expected to last three months and will take =

Distributed Energy Systems Awarded SBIR Phase II Contract.

Distributed Energy Systems Corp. announced the award of a Small Business In=
novative Research (SBIR) Phase II contract from the U.S. Army Missile Defen=
se Agency (MDA) to continue development of lightweight regenerative fuel ce=
ll technology for high altitude airships.  The goal of this 2-year, $749,99=
9 contract is to demonstrate a multi-kilowatt-capable closed-loop hydrogen-=
oxygen regenerative fuel cell and is a continuation of work completed in Ph=
ase I of this project. This regenerative fuel cell can generate pressurized=
 hydrogen and oxygen electrochemically, without mechanical compression. MDA=
 plans to apply this technology for energy storage for high altitude airshi=
ps, which will be used as platforms for sensors and communications vital fo=

Government of Canada to Provide Funding for Fuel Cell Demonstration Project=
s.

Ballard Power Systems will begin three fuel cell demonstration projects in =
cooperation with the Government of Canada under the h2 Early Adopters (h2EA=
) Program. The h2EA Program will fund CAN$2 million of the $4 million progr=
am with the balance of funding to be provided by the program participants. =
The projects will employ Ballard's Nexa RM Series fuel cell as a backup pow=
er source for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) applications and critical =
loads in an industrial/commercial building at the National Research Council=

FuelCell Energy, Marubeni to Sign DFC Agreement with Kawasaki.

FuelCell Energy, Inc. and its partner in Japan, Marubeni Corp., will enter =
into an agreement with Kawasaki Heavy Industries to become a packager of Di=
rect FuelCell=AE (DFC=AE) power plants in Japan. Discussions for conclusion=
 of the agreement are in the final stage. As part of this agreement, Kawasa=
ki will purchase a DFC300A power plant from Marubeni, to be installed at th=

Plug Power Inc. has entered an agreement with Tyco Electronics Power System=

CCEF to Aid Proton Energy in Telecommunications Demonstration.

The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund has agreed to provide funding to Proton E=
nergy Systems, Inc., to design, build and conduct a 24-month demonstration =
of a 5-kW Regenerative Fuel Cell (RFC) for a telecommunications site in sou=
thwestern Connecticut.  This demonstration project, which will use Proton's=
 UNIGEN=AE RFC system, will offer a peak shaving/Uninterruptible Power Supp=
ly (UPS) backup power system for voice and data network equipment. The UNIG=
EN RFC system will serve as a peak shaver for the local grid during high co=
ngestion periods while using off-peak power to produce hydrogen fuel. The s=
ystem will also serve as a 5-kW backup power system for the site's selected=
 critical loads.

Stuart Energy Receives Funding from Natural Resources Canada and CIDA, Ente=
rs into Agreement with PERIC.

Stuart Energy Systems Corporation has been awarded approximately $300,000 i=
n funding from Natural Resources Canada, through the Canadian Transportatio=
n Fuel Cell Alliance (CTFCA) program, for the preliminary engineering of th=
ree electrolysis-based hydrogen-fueling stations.  The targeted locations f=
or these projects are in Ottawa and Toronto, Ontario, and in Charlottetown,=

IdaTech to Design Fuel Processor for Volkswagen.

IdaTech has been selected by Volkswagen to design and manufacture an integr=
ated fuel processor system operating on diesel fuel to be used in Auxiliary=

Nuvera Fuel Cells, Inc. plans to establish a hydrogen test facility with RI=

Palcan Power Systems announced the initial sale of a rare earth metal hydri=

An Asian manufacturer has selected HyRadix, Inc. to supply its hydrogen nee=

Toshiba Corp. has developed a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based p=
ump for fuel cells, a move seen as an important step forward in miniaturizi=

ATP Awards Funding to Three Fuel Cell Projects.

The U.S. Commerce Department's Advanced Technology Program announced that t=
hree of the 32 new cost-sharing awards for research on highly innovative in=
dustrial technologies are to accelerate progress in fuel cells. These three=
 awards represent a total of $26 million of new fuel cell R&D that will be =
initiated with ATP contributing $13.6 million.  The projects include resear=
ch on "High-Power-Density Solid Oxide Fuel Cells for Aerospace Applications=
"; "Scalable Planar Solid-Oxide Fuel Cell Technology for Beyond 200kW"; and=

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) has formed the new Center for Fuel C=
