Earthaven Experience Weekend Offers Taste of "Ecovillage Living"

On the weekend of May 20th-22nd Earthaven Ecovillage, a 60-member,
10-year-old intentional community in the mountains southwest of Asheville,
North Carolina, will host a brief "hands-on" overview of ecovillage living.
            "An intentional community," says event coordinator Rod Rylander,
"is a group of people who live with or near each other in order to carry out
their common purpose together. An ecovillage is an intentional community in
which people practice ecological sustainability to whatever degree they
 can."
            "Earthaven is actually an 'aspiring ecovillage'," he adds,
"since we're still in the development stage."
            Nevertheless, after 10 years of living on the land together the
community does have many sustainable living and social systems in place. Due to requests, Earthaven will open its doors for  weekend experiences in May, July, and October of this year in order to provide visitors the unusual chance to live and learn in an ecovillage.
            Participants will tour Earthaven's natural earth-friendly
passive solar and natural buildings, off-grid power systems, water catchment
systems, compost toilets, and constructed wetlands. They'll have a chance to ask questions at
a Q&A panel of Earthaven members, ("What is it really like living this
 way?"), attend a mini-workshop on the ins and outs of communities by Diana
Christian, author of "Creating a Life Together: Practical Tools to Grow an
Intentional Community", participate in a mini-workshop by Rod Rylander,
originator of the vertical crawl space earth shelter, in building with
available resources and innovative building systems including timber frame,
cob, sawdust blocks, cordwood, adobe, living roofs, and vertical crawl space, get an
overview of agriculture systems being developed, take a medicinal plant walk by Kimchi of Red Moon Herbs, and attend a presentation on Permaculture and sit in on a Council meeting governed by consensus. They'll enjoy community meals and hang out with community members at a Coffeehouse evening, with card games, poetry,
music, camaraderie, and more.
            The cost is $100 per person, which includes 6 meals.
