you were right, I was wrong. Testing on the laptop gave almost the same results, except no backtrace (?!?). Upgrading Clearsilver on the desktop solved the problem. Sorry about the whole thread then :-) it turns out my distro was one version of Clearsilver behind. I'm committing the update to the repository as we speak...
