indexterm between two para tags

Hi,

if I have something like this:

<para>This is a nice day.</para>
<indexterm><primary>ice cream</primary></indexterm>
<para>Let us have some ice cream. ...</para>

Then the generated latex file looks like this:

This is a nice day.
/index{ice cream}
Let us have some ice cream. ...

But there should be a newline before or after the index to begin a new 
paragraph.
How can I handle this, without editing the latex file every time?
