The plus "+" sign causes problems. I modified my automake installation.
I am not in contact with automake maintainer as Gnu site is down, but I
will try later.

Looks like automake problem. I have here automake 1.5, because 1.4
doesn't know anything about python. What version do you have?

That path can be read in Makefile. Variable codedir expands to
/usr/local/share//src and adding src/config.py creates double src/src. I
read something in automake docs about stripping directory names from
sources, but my config.py gets to Makefile as src/config.py.

prefix = /usr/local
datadir = ${prefix}/share
pkgdatadir = $(datadir)/
codedir = $(pkgdatadir)/src

-> codedir = /usr/local/share//src

code_PYTHON = src/config.py \
              src/bakefile.py \
              src/errors.py \
              src/finalize.py \
              src/flatten.py \
              src/mk.py \
              src/mk_dump.py \
              src/reader.py \
              src/utils.py \
              src/writer.py \
              src/xmlparser.py \
              src/outmethods.py

install-codePYTHON: $(code_PYTHON)
        @$(NORMAL_INSTALL)
        $(mkinstalldirs) $(DESTDIR)$(codedir)
        @list='$(code_PYTHON)'; for p in $$list; do\
          if test -f $(srcdir)/$$p; then \
            echo " $(INSTALL_PROGRAM) $(srcdir)/$$p $(DESTDIR)$(codedir)/$$p"; \
            $(INSTALL_DATA) $(srcdir)/$$p $(DESTDIR)$(codedir)/$$p; \
          else :; fi; \
        done
        @PYTHON=$(PYTHON) $(py_compile) --basedir $(DESTDIR)$(codedir) $(code_PYTHON)
