Both are currently "sleeping". It may be interesting to revive them, but I
cannot tell how much work this would be.

This may be a start but possibly not simpler than the original target of
recursive nesting.

Suggestions and patches are welcome, preferably in smaller steps so we can
discuss the changes "interactively".
