That sounds like something in which I would very much be interested.  I
started making a system to generate InfoTeX (as used by most GNU
software) from the XML, but ran into the problems you describe (and my
XSLT knowledge isn't good enough to work round them -- if XSLT has only
'limited' ability to parse strings, I didn't know that it had any!).
