OK -- I have this working as expected now after applying the patch you
send and building from sandbox source. Thanks

Thanks -- that works also for me now that I've set that password in the
config file.

I'm actually testing both on Cygwin both with Cygwin Emacs 21.2 and
X-Windows and with NT Emacs 21.3. Using my sandbox binaries and with the
password set in my refdbcrc file, I'm not seeing any unexpected behavior
now (as long as I make sure to select the leading newline when sending
data to refdbc).
