Do you run ./autogen.sh between downloading from CVS and running configure?
autoconf generates Makefile.in from Makefile.am. It is not a distributed file.

I absolutely agree. If running autogen.sh does not fix the problem, I'll have to
see what went wrong. I know that HEAD built correctly on FreeBSD last time I
tried.
