The "bizarre file content" is actually sort of a symlink emulation within the
man page system. If a man page is to be available through more than one name,
you create one real man page (in this case man8/refdb.8) and put stub files
everywhere else. The ".so" command simply means to source the mentioned file.
This is equivalent to a symlink on the filesystem level.
