Markus,

Cue the music for The Twilight Zone. Look at this:

[rshepard@salmo ~]$ psql -l
           List of databases
     Name | Owner | Encoding
-------------+------------+-----------
  aesi | sql-ledger | LATIN1
  contacts | rshepard | SQL_ASCII
  eiabusiness | rshepard | SQL_ASCII
  postgres | postgres | SQL_ASCII
  refdb | postgres | UTF8
  scirefs | rshepard | SQL_ASCII
  template0 | postgres | SQL_ASCII
  template1 | postgres | SQL_ASCII
  webcollab | rshepard | SQL_ASCII
(9 rows)

[rshepard@salmo ~]$ psql scirefs
Welcome to psql 8.1.3, the PostgreSQL interactive terminal.

Type: \copyright for distribution terms
\h for help with SQL commands
\? for help with psql commands
\g or terminate with semicolon to execute query
        \q to quit

scirefs=#

So, the database _was_ created and I can access it via PostgreSQL. Hmm-m-m.
The script lied to me.

I have to make a bunch of telephone calls this afternoon, and I have a
meeting this evening, so it may be tomorrow before I configure the
appropriate clients in ~/.

Many thanks -- again,

Rich
