That's the hope.

The Zotero project is planning to add Word (and other) integration,
and I'm trying to get them to do it by adding a standard API within
the word processor. Index Data's Yaz client tool recently added SRU
support, so that would make it pretty easy for different applications
to plug-in to a variety of word-processors (the KWord guys are
thinking about this too).

Microsoft is already adding citation support to Word 2007 (complete
with an API), so it wouldn't make sense to add output support through
the raw XML.
