If you still run the version you installed from the FreeBSD ports system, then it is indeed easy to fix: just upgrade to the current version (the port has not been updated unfortunately, but RefDB builds straight out of the tarball on FreeBSD). RefDB is supposed to handle multi-head bibtex citations correctly since 0.9.7.
