It certainly isn't necessary in my case. I wonder if this is an Apache  
1.3 vs. 2.0 issue.

PHP calls this a "Notice". I'm not sure whether it really hurts.

Yes it does. I was just asking because I had accidentally upgraded  
php5 without upgrading php-session. In my case php5 refused to run  
because it couldn't load php-session.
