In that case I suppose that MySQL and PostgreSQL use different default  
encodings, or use different strategies to handle incoming data. Looks  
like PostgreSQL writes your data as they come in, whereas MySQL  
transforms them. I'd like to see your RefDB setup (run refdb-bug to  
create an overview of your setup) and the refdbd log to see what  
happens during addref, ideally with both database engines.
