thank you for posting most of the relevant information along with your  
problem. The only thing I'd like to know in addition is the type of  
reference data which you try to add. The error above is often caused  
by trying to add data without using the proper -A switch. If refdbd  
attempts to read risx data as ris or vice versa, it'll fail right away.

If you're not sure, please send the exact command which you issue to  
add the data, along with the dataset(s).
