I downloaded it from <https://launchpad.net/~bronger/+archive/ppa/+packages=

 same I assume that I have used the latest package build.=A0 The contents o=
f the "Depends:" and "Recommends:" is as you state it.

By the way, although I complaint in my original post I did not thank Torste=
n for providing the source package ... it has been (see below) of great hel=
p!

This notion has set me on the right track:

 - Debian DOES distinguish between sqlite and sqlite3.=A0 Accordingly I ins=
talled the package "libdbd-sqlite3" which IS listed in Torsten's source pac=
kage but only under "Recommends:" and not under "Depends:" (though the pack=
age "libdbd-sqlite" is listed there).

 - In addition to that I had to incorporate a symbolic link into the /etc/r=
efdb that pointed to the appropriate configuration file for this case: "ln =
-s refdbdrc.sqlite3.example refdbdrc".

... and all of a sudden ... I could start the server by entering "/etc/init=
.d/refdb start".

Original problem solved ...

I created an empty test-database in the directory "/var/lib/refdb/db" by is=
suing "sqlite3 /var/lib/refdb/db/test.db"

I connected to this database with "sqlite3" and entered the ".databases" co=
mmand and got the result

which seems fine.

Next=A0 I tried to connect to the database via the refdb server by issuing =
"refdba".=A0 As described in the manual I entered the "viewstat" on the com=
mand line of "refdba" to test the connection.=A0 What I got as reply was: "=
could not open main databas".

In the "/etc/refdbdrc" file I used both "dbpath /var/lib/refdb/db/" and "db=
path /var/lib/refdb/db/test.db", I restarted the server for both options, a=
lways the same result "could not open main databas".

When I run refdba as "refdba -e 2 -L /home/stefan/tmp/refdba.log -l 7" it d=
oes not write additional information into the logfile.

Do you have any clue?
