I could make it:

custom_function($name, $value) {
	return $$name[$value];
}

?>

(I guess that simplifies things for PHP People ;) )

If you can tell me how to call a PHP function w/ variables from c I'll
make this the "short term" solution.

It would probably only take me an hour or 2 to do this.
