Re: In manuscript copies, how to encode the date of origin of the original?

If I didn't misunderstood Mathias the manuscript in question (actually 
described) is a copy.
<origDate> would thus refer to that copy.

I agree "origin date" (of a copy) and "date of the original" (a 
different manuscript) is confusing.
@type="copy" on <origDate> might help to avoid confusion:

<history>
<origin>
<origDate type="copy" when="1589"/>
<date type="original" when="1555"/>
</history>
