Begging (raising) the question why XSLT does have to be in XML syntax,
and why nobody has bothered to invent an alternative non-XML syntax.
AFAICS, the only rationale of XSLT being XML itself can be that XML
literals can be used with ease. But that's not exclusive when other
languages have those as well; for example, JavaScript had E4X and has
JSX (React) now, and also ES6+ template strings. Of the language more
similar to XSLT, Prolog can of course fit the bill, and you don't have
to chastise yourself with XML syntax and damn selector/template
priorities.
