Thank you for your excellent responses!

Ken Holman notified me that I can simply convert the XML document to CSV and then open the CSV file in Excel. Given that I am doing a bunch of processing using XSLT, this solution works well for me (I wrote a simple XSLT program to convert the XML to CSV).
