I couldn't create the java virtual machine

When I ran the command java --version, I got the following errors:

Error could not create the Java Virtual Machine
Error a fatal exception has occurred.  Program will exit.

When I ran the command java -version, I received the following feedback:

java version 1.8.0_171
Java SE runtime environment (build 1.8.0_171-b11

I don't know how to fix this.  Can anyone help me?
