Can't get eXIst to start

Hi Old returning eXist developer here and a little rusty ... I have a M1 MacBook Pro running Sonama, eXist installed by JRE, java 11 JDK installed by Brew. Java - version works as expected, echo $JAVA_HOME contains a path with the openjdk bin folder. I keep getting ‘This application requires that Java 8 or later be installed …’ message. I’ve seen previous versions of this call and I think I’m compliant with the fixes there. I’ve also tried this with Oracle Java too with the same result. Any ideas? Or exact paths to stuff that you know works?
