Perhaps.  I've certainly considered removing the requirement, but
haven't had time to do so, and the priority seems low.

Understood.  There is a note in the version of the README in our CVS
repository, so the next Expat release will include such a note.

Understood.  It's not unreasonable to expect a bit more from
configure, but I'm afraid our autoconf expert has been more than a
little busy lately.
