Summary: xmlwf should link statically to Expat

Initial Comment:
I'm sure there's a way to link the Expat library into
the executables built from the Expat distribution, but
I'm not sure what the portable "libtool way" is.

I can do this on Linux by building xmlwf using "make
LDFLAGS=-static", but doubt this will work cross-platform.

Can you add the right magic to the LINK_EXE variable in
Makefile.in? Thanks!

I'm rejecting my own report here, because I still can't
remember the answer to Greg's question of "Why?".

Yes, there is a libtool switch to do this, but I'm not sure
why. Why wouldn't we just link to the shared library?

I am not sure I should mention this here:

But there is another issue still open, as listed
in the requirements for the next release:

The build process on Unix should create both
libexpat.{a,so} and libexpatw.{a,so} by default.
