Greetings:

Compiled the 1.95.6 package using both gcc (3.2) and
Sun cc (5.0) compilers. No problem compiling. Both
compilations fail "make check" identically (and no, it
is not the lack of the check package). The output from
the check is attached. 

Any insights will be appreciated.

Found the problem. The problem was that the runtests objects
were being linked to the old libraries. The hint was that
the reported version did not match the current build.
