Autotools update?

Hello,

Would you accept a patch that updates the autotools support to more 
recent versions, and adds (and documents) a few command line switches 
(like --enable-context-bytes=2048 for example)?

Just trying to get a feeler on this.  If you're interested, also let me 
know any other command line switches you would like to see added while 
I'm at it.
