Mozilla's added some XPointer support. Anyone know if they're likely to
ever go beyond simple linking in XLink?

Since milestone 1.4alpha Mozilla supports XPointer. Specifically, it
supports the W3C Recommendations XPointer Framework, element() scheme
and xmlns() scheme . Additionally it supports FIXptr and fixptr()
scheme, as well as xpath1() scheme. More details here:

http://www.mozilla.org/newlayout/xml/#linking

There is also an older XPointer add-on available from mozdev.org:

To say that Bilbo's breath was taken away is no description at all.
