whats the use of * in {s:i,s:i,*} ?

Hi,
1) My program was crashing because of the * in
xmlrpc_parse_value(&HA_env,HA_result,"{s:i,*}","ErrorCode",&HA_ret);
WHY THIS HAPPENED?
2) My server is returning me XML string containing
'unknown number' of username:passwd key:value pairs.
At client side i need to parse them all,How is this
possible when we dont know the number of key:value
pairs coming from the server at client side ??
(I know how to do it if i have no. of key:value pairs
known at client side.)
