If the Apache committers were seriously interested in this, I suspect 
I could write a test case. I'm not sure I know enough about the 
Xerces internals to write a decent patch for the code itself though. 
As I said, I'm very nervous about the code I wrote for my own use. 
But if it were decided that this was a good idea, then I guess I'd be 
willing to try. Somebody would have to give my code a thorough going 
over before committing it though.

I do suspect that this would be better as a general SAX feature. Something like

http://xml.org/sax/features/allow-XML1.1

Xerces is hardly the only parser that's likely to need this, after 
all. I've cc'd the sax-devel list so we can get the relevant 
discussion going over there.
