Yes, thank you! This is really helpful. I especially appreciate the effort you 
have made to put this explanation into such a broad context — historic and 
otherwise.

I was worried that my understanding of basic concepts of XML Schema 1.0 / Part 
1 was flawed on some very fundamental level. It's good to know that this is in 
fact a known characteristic of XML Schema 1.0.
