How to learn about new web design stuff (a bit off topic)?

Hi,

I realize that web designing is getting more complicated by the day with new things: Ruby or Rails, Brackets, HTML5 etc. coming out all the time. Then there's the whole making your website look good on both computers and mobile devices thing (I work at home, I've never had a mobile device so I'm clueless about them). I'm trying to find a way to get up to speed and work out what new things I even need to learn and what will be history tomorrow. I've tryed joining two web design related Yahoo groups. One has to aprove requests to join and nobody seems to be doing that. The other is full of sex related spam and I've yet to see an on-topic post in the thing. Does anybody have any suggestions?
