The new issue of SVG Magazine looks great! 

 

I think this list has all but outlived its purpose. I think most of the active discussions of SVG now are 

1.       Twitter – a loosely confederated band of enthusiasts, skeptics and naysayers tweet about solutions and problems there, though it is strewn about like autumn leaves on a windy day. @TheGraphicalWeb there provides a sort of focal point for SVG and allied and alien technologies.

2.       Stack exchange – not a forum for discussion of broad topics, but there is a lot of activity there with people asking how to solve problems and some good (peer reviewed) answers to those problems. Some names familiar to you post there with some regularity. I wish I had more time to follow it.

3.       Google plus. There are a band of SVG enthusiasts there who exchange messages intermittently. Again, mostly familiar names.

4.       The W3C’s SVG discussion http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-svg/ To those who might lurk here at svg-developers, it is for discussion of building of the SVG spec and not for questions about how to do things or for submitting new content.

5.       Doug Schepers has been promoting a new “solutions” site of some sort that would include instructional stuff sort of like in  http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/IG/resources/svgprimer.html only spread out in little pieces, up-to-date and curated like a wiki. It is sort of like the SVG Interest group only outside W3C and not just SVG but all the lesser things too (HTML, CSS, ChemML, etc). I can never remember the link to it though, but it seems like a good idea if anyone has time to contribute!

6.       I’ve been experimenting some with Ello as a way of promoting the 2015 conference in Pittsburgh. Ello is getting a lot of press recently (and isn’t all press good press?) and  is enjoying (or enduring) unanticipated enthusiasm. 31,000 new users per hour at the end of September (http://www.zdnet.com/will-new-social-network-ello-finally-topple-facebooks-dominance-7000034161/)  I’m thinking that it might be fun to set up a little SVG neighborhood there while it is still undergoing exponential growth (they just throttled up the exponent a bit). Since it is by invitation only, I’m offering a few invitations to those who might be interested in joining, so folks from here are encouraged to email me if you’d like an invite!  I made similar offers on Facebook and the offers were scarfed up in no time, though the twitter offer for some reason seemed not to generate much interest. A lot of former students (and young tech savvy people) are connected to me on Facebook while the Twitter folks are all the old folks.  It’s too soon to tell if my harebrained scheme will gain any legs, but it is sorta fun experimenting!

I remember when this forum was reported as one of the best on the web. Perhaps it’s still one of the best, but certainly not very busy any longer. How did this  happen? Mystery, mystery… Lucky enough, I can see that a bunch of hardcore stayed put, as the guardians of the temple. Hi guardians of the temple.

 

Could it be because nobody, owners and moderators alike, seems to care anymore about approval of new members and posts alike? Yes, that could be one reason, and as a proof of fact here it is: early October I created  a new member for the account of SVG magazine (the old one didn’t seem to be valid anymore) to announce the release of the October 2014 issue (http://svgmagazine.com/oct2014/), which is one of the reasons of this post. Since then, total silence, no approval, no post, no reply from private message to the group owners.  Well, yes, ten days is like an eternity. Suppose a new member needing to solve an issue, will he or she wait this long or longer? Chances are they will search elsewhere and not come back.
