It's necessary to distinguish between validity and well-formedness. I 
think in this case the parser makes *no* effort to detect invalid 
documents. It may perhaps make some effort to detect malformed 
documents. Please do not use the word "valid" as a catch-all for 
"correct". In the context of XML, the word valid has a very specific 
technical meaning.
