FWIW, making the change I suggested does seem to fix the segfault,
although some parts of the output seem to be on the wrong page (in
particular a white-space-treatment='preserve' figure seems to have
been split across to pages, both parts being at the top of the page) .
Not sure if that's a separate problem.
